GERTRUDE C. ONYEWUCHE

Gertrude Onyewuche is a seasoned private legal practitioner with robust experience in different areas of Law. Her professional career stretches over three decades. She is presently the Head of chambers of the Law firm of Gertrude Onyewuche & Associates.

She obtained her first degree in Law from the University of Benin in 1986 and was admitted into the Nigerian Bar in 1987. She holds a Master of International Law and Diplomacy, a postgraduate degree from the University of Lagos in 2001. She is a chartered secretary and corporate governance practitioner and fellow of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators, FCIS (London and Nigeria) in 2010. An Associate of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (ACIArb) UK, Nigerian branch in 2010; a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators (FICMC) 2017, with Training of Trainers (TOT) certification in 2016; an internationally Certified online mediator (ODR Europe) 2020; a Lagos multi-door Court House (LMDC) Mediator with several years of experience in Mediation practice.

Her CORE AREAS of practice are general corporate and commercial Law practice, company secretarial/Corporate governance practice, with vast experience in handling board meetings and documentation, mediation practice, and NGO activities. She has a flair for board secretarial duties and ensuring that the tenets of corporate governance are maintained. She is qualified with the requisite knowledge, skills, and experience to handle board/committee secretarial duties. She has a passion for handling and managing issues related to boards and is fulfilled when the boards and companies are performing ethically and optimally with great impact on the whole of a setup and society. 

She was one of the four International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) consultants/facilitators who in collaboration with Global HIV/AIDS Initiative Nigeria (GHAIN) developed a manual on “Legal Education and Will Writing”. This was organized as a Training of Trainers for organizations within the six GHAIN supported states (Anambra, Cross River, Edo, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kano, and Lagos) in Support of orphaned and vulnerable children affected by HIV.

She had and holds two terms financial secretarial positions in FIDA (inclusive of chairing some of its committees) and Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators, respectively, She was secretary of the Lagos State branch of the Network of the Bar Bench and Police (NBBP), supported by IPAS Nigeria in 2009 and coordinator from 2013 – 2014.       

She successfully handled the UNICEF (Child Protection) program on children with disabilities, as the Project Coordinator (September 2010 to March 2011) which involved documentation, trainer in the Training of Trainers (TOT), fieldwork, report writing, In six (6) southern states of Nigeria.
